Thanks to all who have commented on the Data Plate issue. I think we ghave
cleared up some misunderstandings on the legality and purpose of the data
plate, etc...maybe just like the identification plate on your
automobile....

My understanding is that the Data plate (the one made  issued, and
installed by ERCO) is the airplane......and along with an Airworthyness
Certificate and Registration Certificate makes the airplane a legal
airplane. 

The tail plate was recently required for easy identification of an
airplane...due to the fact sometimes one cannot look inside a closed
airplane to identify it..make it easier for law enforcement, CAP, etc to
find a missing airplane, etc..

Some have suggested that if one has a Data Plate, then one can build a
legal airplane around it.....but simply aquiring a data plate and sticking
it on a slaveged airplane would not be legal....The Data Plate, along with
the log books is the legal idenity of the airplane......I think.
