There is an interesting article on wing shape in the current issue of
Flying --Jan 2003 issue --Pg 79, Technicalities : Rectangular wings , by
Peter Grrison...pointing out that the hershey bar Cherokee wing is almost
optimum for performance....but maybe not looks.... The rectangular wing
attains the best performance and cost of construction because in
performance it atttains the optimum shape for a wing which seems to be an
elipse.......Interesting that the Ercoupe wing is so shaped, and Fred
Weick apparently thought the additional cost of building an elipitical
wing was worth the expense over a rectangular wing he and Thorp approved
for the Cherokee...

Interesting stuff! ,...but not STOL..... However utilizing the
parameters of the original 415 C and landing speeds, the Ercoupe almost
reached STOL....setting a comprimise that was acceptable. The "D" model
performance was not, except for modern days with paved runways, where
arrival at 75 mph is OK....
