Hello, Percy,
The Pilot Operating Handbook specifies AVIATION GRADE 73 octane
fuel.
Mogas does not qualify. I think your IA should do a little more reading
before he says some things.
The mogas STC from EAA allows us to use "unleaded auto gasoline
that
has 87 minumum anti-knock index per ASTM Spec. D-439, as long as it
contains no alcohol." EAA was granted this STC after literally hundreds
of hours of ground and flight testing at various temperatures and
pressures, to ensure that it was safe. If we buy the STC we are then
registered with the Feds as an STC holder, and, if we do have a problem
with the fuel, the Feds will be able to gather statistics and inform all
the other STC holders about that problem. As I said, I have not had any
problems with mogas.
If you have 80-87 avialable, by all means, burn it. It is
impossible
to get in this area, so EAA has done a lot to reduce the operating costs
for those of us in the rest of the country.
