Unconfirmed comments I heard several years ago were:
        The 73 octane referred to in the original type certificate was
measured
in a different way than is used now for gas-pump labels.
        That 73 octane, I was told, comes out to be a higher number in
current
numbering system.  Specifics were given, but I don't remember them.

Your mechanic does have an interesting point, though.  Oh well, <sigh>
I've already got the autofuel STC so I'm legal under that system.  It's
quite easy to get 87 octane that purportedly has no alcohol around
here.  I do test it to be sure it really doesn't have alcohol, just to
be sure.
