There was discussion of the K-mart $100 GPS on a couple of the newsgroups. Bottom line is that it still continues to do the limited things that it does just fine in an airplane. However, there's no mapping features, no real database to speak of. Just way points. So if you want to know, in terms of latitude and longitude 'where am I?' or to get from point A to point B to point C to point D in those same terms, they're fine.
My Lowrance 300 allows me to say 'get me from MMU to WWD.' Along
the way, it shows me major VFR landmarks coming up, warns me when
I get near controlled or restricted airspace, etc. In that respect,
it acts sort of like another pair of eyes with a chart in hand (about
like a 12-year-old who really likes to fly. Darn handy :-) ).
Still, for $100, I'd sooner have the K-Mart one as not have any
independent means of determining my point on the surface of the
earth. What's to lose?
