As an alternative to spending the big bucks involved with aviation
specific units, for those who are not reluctant to play with computer
downloading and such, one can buy the Garmin 12XL or GPS II + for around
$200-250 and download from the internet all the airports in a given
region. This has worked very well for me, giving all the airports in
Okla. I downloaded the waypoints from www.landings.com. I elected to
rename them to the official designations. To me this is a better option
than spending a grand on something which will be outdated in a year or
two. You can also get various software for free or very reasonably
priced which will help you manage this data and will display waypoints,
routes, etc on a scanned image of a sectional or other map. I use fugawi
and waypoint+ for these purposes.
