Because the fittings are riveted on, it would be not be too easy to take them off and inspect. I would advise remembering that the people who had this crash out there were flying in awful winds and turbulence. They would probably be alive now (but they wouldn't have made the fly-in!) if they'd set a limit of 15 knots of wind (including gusts) on their flying. The plane had been inspected and nothing bad was seen. Though we know that bad stuff can hide, from the description of the area, it sounds like it was weakened where it couldn't be seen and just popped. I would not feel real good about flying any plane in 30 or 40 mph gusts!
