----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]----You know, about a year ago I talked with Gary, one of the mechanics at the
shop that rebuilds a lot of Ercoupes in Tucumcari, NM They had
repaired/restored 30 Coupes that had various types and levels of corrosion.
All of them had wing spar corrosion and 28 of the 30 had metalized wings.
One idea they had was to place a thin sheet of mylar between steel fittings
and aluminum such as the wing attach fittings, the rear spar hinge and the
aileron fittings to prevent the dissimilar metal corrosion. I don't know,
however, if they ever actually did this or if it is an approved method of
repair. Certainly, painting both surfaces with a self-etching primer would
help a lot. I wish the Tucumcari group were on this List because I know they
have a very high level of experience and could be of help to us.
