Jerry,
Your friend Jim has an idea going. You know the old Sikorsky helicopters had lot of aluminum to steel surface mating, and the tape and Permatex was the way the factory had of separating them. It worked very well I might add.

I talked to Gary at the airport and he said he had not talked to Jim or anyone else about repairing wing spar corrosion. To his knoledge there is no approved method to repair spar corrosion, and as far as putting mylar between steel fittings and aluminum to prevent dissimilar metal corrosion, apparently this is Jim's  idea because it's sure not Gary's. He said the only way to fix spar corrosion is to buy the new spars from Univair, or throw away the corroded wings and see if you can find a clean pair from some where else. Gary said he has refurbished approx. 25 coupes and out of them about 6 had metal wings, 3 had wing spar corrosion and he scrapped the wings.      Jerry.

You know, about a year ago I talked with Gary, one of the mechanics at the
shop that rebuilds a lot of Ercoupes in Tucumcari, NM  They had
repaired/restored 30 Coupes that had various types and levels of corrosion.
All of them had wing spar corrosion and 28 of the 30 had metalized wings.
One idea they had was to place a thin sheet of mylar between steel fittings
and aluminum such as the wing attach fittings, the rear spar hinge and the
aileron fittings to prevent the dissimilar metal corrosion.  I don't know,
however, if they ever actually did this or if it is an approved method of
repair.  Certainly, painting both surfaces with a self-etching primer would
help a lot.  I wish the Tucumcari group were on this List because I know they
have a very high level of experience and could be of help to us.
Jim
