What Paul said about the ailerons applies also to the horizontal, the fins and the rudders, none of which are inspectable in situ. It is real scary. We rebuilt the horizontal using new leading edges from Univair and top and bottom skins we made ourselves. The fins and rudders were opened, blasted, primed and then re-rivetted. Light to heavy surface corrosion was found inside every assembly, though the frames were in the main good. New fin leading edges were fitted, again from Univair. Total cost was about $500 in parts and materials, 2 kegs of Miller and countless hours of labor. While at that end of the ship we also removed, treated and replaced the rear bulkhead and rebuilt the rear elevator and rudder quadrants. We also replaced the aft section of the top skin which had been spread by many hands pressing down on it (removing this skin section also helped with bead-blast and spray gun access to the inside rear of the fuselage). As Paul mentioned, expect to do the same with the ailerons. Just be grateful there's no flaps.
