Ed, you may want to check the fuel gauge inside the cockpit. Sometimes
there
is a leak there, resulting in fuel smell inside the cockpit. There should
be
gaskets available to fix it, if it is the problem. My Mooney had it before
I
bought her.

I guess I got one of the good ones?  My 1946 415D ser #607(converted
C-model)
has nine gallon wing tanks and a six gallon header tank.  I confirmed this
by
running the wing tanks dry and re-filling them.  I also drained the header
tank and re-filled it.  Now if the header tank just didn't seep fuel and
smell up the cockpit I'd be really happy.  No leaks, it just smells.
