----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- Had an interesting experience with a Citation yesterday. Flew into Sun River from the North and was doing a wind check as I flew by (I had called in from 6 miles out stating my intentions to land). I saw
the Citation sitting on the S. end of the airport at the hold short
line apparently doing a systems check or whatever. I couldn't figure
out why he was there since the wind was out of the S and he would be
taking this big expensive bird off downwind (on a short, relatively
high altitude runway and a hot day!) I turned around (Sun River has
a
right hand pattern due to noise) and flew my downwind leg and called
it out mid field. The jet still hadn't budged. About that time I
turned base (calling out each leg) he pulls out and states that he is
in position for takeoff. As soon as I turn final (again radioing
base
to final) he guns it!!!! I quickly ask him to state his intentions
(I
couldn't quite tell if he was rolling out since I couldn't judge his
forward speed) and he said he aborted but couldn't turn around due to
the narrow runway. I did a missed approach and the guy mumbled
something about "well I guess I'll use one-eight." Gee, that was
nice
of him!
Interesting experience seeing a big ole plane come barreling straight
towards you on final! I guess the more expensive they are the more
they feel they have the right-of-way. Some guys that saw the whole
thing later told me that he was probably pissed because I just cost
him $60 in gas for having to taxi to the correct end of the runway.
Neverless if you ever fly in to Central Oregon make sure to get to
Sun
River. There's *always* a unique plane or two there to check out.
Yesterday there was a really cool Staggerwing and a couple weeks ago
there were *two* Helio Couriers, one a tri-gear and the other a very
original taildragger (painted black and grey, looked very CIAish.)
