Using my analytical brain ( not the BS one that most of you have come to
know), I have figured out the
problem. When I first purchased the Coupe, I had to learn to fly it
alone. I gathered all the
information I could on this site, and read everything else I could find.
I flew it. The reason I had
to do it this way was so that I could teach the instructor how to fly it,
so that he could check me out
in it. Sounds stupid, right? Well, I couldn't find a soul who had ever
flown one around here. Anyway,
I've had a hard time not flying it like all the other birds I've flown,
which is somewhat of an extended
final. The problem with a Coupe, is that you have to hold lots of power
if you have a long final. If
you don't, you sink like a rock. The natural tendency is to try and
extend by pulling back on the
yoke. What you really need to do is add power, and keep the yoke where
you had it. If I hadn't had
about 300 hours in a Colt, I'd most likely have landed 1/2 mile short, in
the water of Utah Lake. The
Colt has roughly the same glide slope as a Coupe. Nowadays, I start
thinking about turning base about
the time I pass the end of the runway while on down wind. It's taken me
about 30 hours of flight time
to get out of my old bad habits of thinking I could extend with elevator.
One another thought. I just had to cancel my reservations for the
Jean Ercoupe Fly-in. Bummer. I
was really looking forward to it. It's been raining here in Utah all
morning, and isn't supposed to
clear up until Saturday afternoon. Another storm coming in Sunday
afternoon. Oh well, maybe next
year.
