It must be worth the money to you or you wouldn't be
considering it - what is its charm to you?
Mainly, the vertical card compass has a face which looks
like your DG, so transferring heading from compass to DG is
less prone to error plus, vertical cards are damped more
than the fluid compasses so they don't bounce as much in
turbulence. Due to the above attributes a vertical card
compass can substitute more effectively for a DG if you
don't have one. As a navigational tool, I've never found the
need for one in lots of instrument flying. IMHO a good GPS
with an HSI function will serve the same purpose (while in
motion only) plus provide other nav data at the same price.
