I seem to be missing something on this discussion on degaussing parts of
the Ercoupe for the mounting of a compass. I have lost the original post
but my impression was that he wanted to mount a vertical card compass to
the centre pillar on the windscreen. I am sure my Ercoupe has a alloy
centre support pillar and as such should not be magnetically sensitive.
Other items around that area are also alloy except perhaps for the roll
over hoop which I think has a steel side window guide.

If you start degaussing around the instrument panel make sure you have no
electrically driven instruments near the degaussing coil. It does wonders
with the calibration of these. I include the tacho in this. We used to
calibrate the tacho's with degaussing coils.

I cannot see anything in a Coupe that would have made the level of
deflection error seen in the original post. Take your time on this one and
tread carefully. You may end up with more problems than you anticipated.
