It should be faster and run better for more users on a machine I think.
Also, it's compiled C code, and that should count for something speed and
resource wise as well...

Right again. Not to mention aggressive metadata caching. Opening a folder with a few thousand messages will take a little while, but from that point on, paging through the folder index is instantaneous. Reopening the folder, if it is unchanged, will also be instantaneous.
