If you have something to modify, you MUST work as "root", definig a
password let you login as user <balfolk> wihout accidently harm the rest
of the system.

Yes you an use "balfolk" as mailinglist account and you have TWO
possibilities as Sam has alredy explaned:
1) /etc/courier/aliases/balfolk
somelist: balfolk
somelist-owner: balfolk
somelist-subscribe: balfolk
somelist-unsubscribe: balfolk
somelist-help: balfolk
...
Then setup:
/home/balfolk/.courier-somelist
/home/balfolk/.courier-somelist-owner
/home/balfolk/.courier-somelist-defaule
2) use your acount as mailinglist using:
/home/balfolk/.courier
/home/balfolk/.courier-balfolk
/home/balfolk/.courier-balfolk-somelist
/home/balfolk/.courier-balfolk-somelist-owner
/home/balfolk/.courier-balfolk-somelist-defaule
/home/balfolk/.courier-default

No, there is noting replaced, but the message to
<[email protected]>
is simply passed to
<[email protected]>
AND
<[email protected]>
The messages (To: Header) are NOT modified
