While we recognise that phone calls are part of doing business, we've had
to say no to those who have heavy phone use because it was disruptive to
everyone else. Even those who generally work quietly were encouraged to
book the boardroom (which is included in all levels of membership) if they
had a lengthy call, or otherwise use the stairwell, lounge, or a small
communications closet that we dubbed the phone booth.

However, since we're relocating in a few days, we've had the luxury of
crafting a new space and to re-examine how we do things and how we can
improve, and we now have our open concept area separated into two areas,
one for regular folks, and one for those with heavy phone use. It's a great
opportunity to finally welcome those in pr, event planing, sales,
journalism, training, and other professions who are on the phone a lot, and
by the nature of how they'll be seated they'll be able to self-regulate how
they interfere (or ideally don't interfere) with others, and it won't have
any impact on the rest of the members.

In the new space, we'll still encourage people to use the stairwell and
boardroom when they have a lengthy call, and can now add the heavy phone
use area to the list of options.

There's another space here in Toronto, Co-lab, that plans to have
lightweight moveable hoods that those who need to take a lengthy phone call
can move onto their desk and not disturb others (or I suppose disturb
others far less). It was an evolution from the idea of a standup call hood
that is attached to the wall, much like these:
http://www.walkingpaper.org/5095, which I think are totally rad and I want
to make one or two of those too.
