for wiggle room, if by this is meant the kind of permitted margins of error
which for instance have allowed the recent uprating of productivity increase
figures for 1973-1991 by the US government, subject of much discussion
elsewhere, I do not know whether the revised figures are credible or not. I
don't believe anybody does. Productivity figures are statistical artefacts
which say as much about the political goals of the governments which produce
them as they do about economic reality. Some economists (like Doug Henwood)
have spent huge amounts of time discussing BLS productivity figures. They
were almost certainly wasting their time.
