A great part of the coercion simply arises from the incredible inequalities, don't 
you think so? And also from the vulgar show-off habits and from the other 
despicable traits of many of those local elites, of course. I'm of course not 
suggesting that there is a mechanical relationship as different cultures have 
different tolerances for such things. 
John, the coercion also is there for all to see in China despite the size of the 
country. 
Aren't you both searching for too complicated explanations?
