> I want a conversation

Most of us have been on elists for 5 or 6 years, including you, Carrol. Our foolish
hopes, which we mostly shared with Wall St pundits (they thought the Net empowered
profits, we thought it empowered the revolution, and we were equally deluded) have
proven forlorn. I think we ought to recognise by now that the internet is just a
passing fad like citizens' band radio. In England there was a joke: 'What did morons
do before cb radio?' I don't quite put us in the category of cb but we are not far
off it by now. Inanition, terminal irrelevance and profound fatigue are the main
products of the New Economy. Only irretrievable fools like Doug Henwood are
incapable of seeing what a bubble all this was, and what a complete waste of time it
now is. No-one can be bothered with conversations, Carrol. It is a charming dream,
but a dream nonetheless.
