This provides more official servers that valve doesn't have to pay for. Or perhaps valve even gets a cut of the revenue. Also because of this there's official servers in areas where there wouldn't be any... I mean where valve wouldn't bother adding any (look at what is going on with TF2's Mann Up mode and EU/Australian players).
Of course it would be the best if we (the community) could run these servers. Perhaps have a special mode of server where modifications are not allowed and a registration required (like TF2 but more strict). But that is harder to implement and maintain. So I guess what ends up happening is valve lets Pinion run servers in exchange for ads and then they don't need to worry about running servers themselves. In all honesty the whole splitting of the community just sucks. CS and CS:S would not... scratch that.. valve would not be where it is now were it not for the community running servers and creating mods. But as valve moves forward it seems like we are being forgotten. Official servers in CS:GO getting priority, official servers in DOTA 2 only (and that game was a modification to begin with!). Seems short sited to me, but then again valve is just too big now. They can do this. Letting Pinion run official servers in exchange for ads is just too convenient and it also has the added benefit of having servers in more locations with no service/maintenance costs. Granted this would be much more fitting to find on official TF2 servers, but...
