"Something about plugins creating too much screen clutter. There's a quote
from Alfred... somewhere."

That's a choice that should be left up to modders and mappers! If there's a
problem with too much clutter, then the makers of the plugins should fix
it! Not fair to punish everyone and remove the ability for those who put it
to good use. What a crock.

"That wasn't intentional but was instead collateral damage from engine
changes starting with Portal 2. They don't use them so there wasn't likely
a reason for them to fix it. Screen overlays were never perfect anyway,
requiring cheats to be on (if only temporarily) to be able to display them,
not being dynamic, and being able to be disabled by clients."

They didn't require cheats if they were executed by the server. I've used
ClientCommand("r_screenoverlay ...") etc... no problem, and never once had
to enable cheats, even briefly.
