The coolers are definitely a worth while investment. Especially if you're using it as a mobile desktop replacement. Brought my machine's average running temperature down by between 8-10 degrees celcius....
My notebook's fan rarely ever goes onto high speed while I'm working now... Where it did quite often before... Now it only goes on when I play UT2004... 300-500 bucks to protect your 15-20k investment.... a bargain.... Got the Vantec LapCool 4... Folds up nice and compact too... And like Gary says... it raises the laptop to a nice working angle... Although mine is 15.4" 1680x1050 it's still very readable and workable... I bought an Acer Travelmate about a year and a half ago... 15.4", 2GB RAM, 120GB SATA HDD, 2Ghz Duo Core, ATI X1600 Radeon 512MB GDDR3... Value for money... The equivalent Dell would have been about 5k more at the time... Not sure on Acer's service levels... This is my 2nd Travelmate and I haven't had any problems so far... My 2c worth...
