I bought my first laptop about 8 months ago, after having used IBM and
Sony laptops in the past (work-provided). I decided to listen to my
heart more than my pocket and bought myself a (black) MacBook. Oh,
wow! I have never been happier. Fast machine that doesn't get nearly
as hot as the Sony Vaio did.

The screen isn't all that big, but fine for what I do in my own time.
The hardware and software are both rock-solid, and aesthetically
pleasing. I now have a slick Desktop plus the power of UNIX
underneath. Having been a NeXTSTEP fan many years ago, I was very
excited to see and use it re-incarnated as Mac OS, and the upgrade to
Leopard recently went fairly smooth. I'm itching to see if I can boot
and run Ubuntu on it as well, but for now I'm really quite happy using
Mac OS at home.

I've never needed to put Apple's support to the test, since nothing
has ever broken (yet, touch wood). I suspect that support might be
better here in Ireland than in South Africa, though.

My mother-in-law stepped on my power cable 2 nights ago with the
laptop on top of our bookshelf - quite a distance to fall... no
problemo: the magnetically-attached power chord just slipped off
gently - no need to call Apple support :)

Apple pays a lot of attention to fine details like this, and Steve
Jobs is usually in favour of slick, simple interfaces, as witnessed in
the design of the remote control and other Apple products. Other
commodity products just feel clunky and cheap by comparison. Yes,
Apples can be expensive, but if you look at the entire package, I
think it's worth it.

Johan.
