The Library Development Division invites library staff from around the
state to a LITA Regional Institute on User Centered Design on July 24,
2009 at the Thompson Conference Center here in Austin. The speaker,
Brenda Reeb, is the coordinator of the usability program at the River
Campus Libraries <http://www.library.rochester.edu/> , University of
Rochester.

During the day-long institute, participants learn about a design
process for managing digital projects within a library context and learn
about usability theory and methodology. The workshop is geared towards
library staff that work with the library's website, including website
designers, usability practitioners, and web page editors.

TSLAC <http://www.tsl.state.tx.us> brings you this event free of
charge! Workshop Registration is first-come-first-serve with room
capacity at 80 participants. Workshop hours are from 8:30am - 5:00pm.
Light morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided, but lunch is
on your own.

Trustee Training - The Misadventures

The Wyoming State Library <http://www.wyominglibraries.org> has done it
again. You thought there was no topping the library "Mudflap" girl.
Then, there was the logo with the cowboy riding the book. Apparently,
their creativity does not stop there. Wyoming State Library staff
produced a nifty set of videos targeted at an ongoing need for many
public libraries - trustee training. Go meet Dan the newbie trustee and
learn from his mistakes!

Trustee Trouble <http://www.wyominglibraries.org/trusteetrouble.html>
includes a series of short videos that document the missteps of a rookie
trustee with no idea what makes a good library board member. Dan learns
that meetings must be attended in the video called "Land of Confusion".
He begins to understand what advocacy for the library means in "Taking
it to the Streets". He bungles through his relationship with the
library Director in "Hail to the Chief" and then explores topics such as
finance, policies and planning.

This series is assembled with discussion questions
<http://www.wyominglibraries.org/trusteetroublefiles/Trustee_Trouble_Que
stions.pdf> that the board can tackle after viewing. If your board
needs training, the Wyoming State Library provides a fun way to do it
with Trustee Trouble. TSLAC has the DVD available for checkout, so
contact Anne Ramos <mailto:[email protected]> via email or call
1-800-252-9386 (TX only) if you would rather not access the videos
online.

copyright in the classroom.

Here's the description: The Center for Social Media
<http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/> recently released the "Code of
Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Educators
<http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/resources/publications/code_for_med

educators to deal with fair use when using digital resources. It
addresses creating and sharing curriculum, as well as student use of
copyrighted materials in their own work. Join us for a lively discussion
of this new approach to copyright issues in the classroom. Bring your
questions and an open mind.
