Top 25 Websites for Teaching and Learning from AASL
<http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/LibraryDevelopments/~3/k6d5u6u89l0/>

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 05:04 PM PDT

The time has flown by since my return from ALA Annual in Chicago in
mid-July. I had big plans to blog more from the conference and took some
really good notes on my laptop. Then I ran into the 21st-century
equivalent of the "dog ate my homework" and suffered a loss of
connectivity to the state library network rendering my blogging null and
void. Upon my return to Austin, the daily grind pushed my planned blog
posts to the background. But one session has stuck in my brain and I
decided I had to write about it because I thought it was so informative
and that was the American Association of School Librarians' (AASL)
session on "Top 25 Websites for Teaching and Learning"
cfm> .

This session was a panel presentation of the award winning web sites
with short descriptions and demos of many of the sites. It was a highly
interactive and engaging session that covered all of the web sites in 90
minutes - quite a feat. Even the downtime between sites was filled with
polls that audience members could respond to through their cell phones
or laptops utilzing one of the award winners Poll Everywhere
<http://polleverywhere.com/> to ask which of the websites they found
most useful or were going to explore.

They also had several suggestions for how to expose teachers,
administrators, students, or parents to the sites or just increase their
interest, including:

* Ask for five minutes at faculty meeting to demo one tool or talk
about the award winners - even if teachers don't ask at the meeting,
invariably they will ask you later about "that web stuff thingy you
talked about at the meeting" and you can spend more time with them to
give an in-depth explanation

* Use Voicethread <http://www.voicethread.com> to create a tour for
teachers, students, or parents of the various web sites and resources
from the award winning sites

* Play a slideshow created in Animoto <http://www.animoto.com> at "Back
to School Night" to highlight the upcoming activities for the school
year. Invariably, someone will ask you how you made the coolest
slideshow ever and could you help them do the same thing.

AASL has a downloadable page of bookmarks
<http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/aboutaasl/bestlist/bl_bookmark.p
df> (PDF - 388K) of all of the winning websites, plus additional
resources, including the page
<http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/aboutaasl/bestlist/bestwebsitest
op25.cfm> that lists the descriptions and tips for using each of the 25
web sites and which of the AASL Standards for a 21st-Century Learner
<http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/guidelinesandstandards/learnings
tandards/standards.cfm> the websites support.
