Please note that if your library is eligible for the Gates Summit,
notification has been sent to you.

Only those libraries who replied to the survey last fall and have slow
connectivity speed are eligible.

The Gates Opportunity Online Grant Program
<http://www.gatesfoundation.org/press-releases/Pages/faster-internet-con
nections-in-libraries-081218.aspx> planning is well underway here at
TSLAC. Texas is one of seven states around the nation chosen for this
pilot program to enable faster internet connections in our libraries.
Better connection speeds mean more people can access the full range of
online applications and opportunities.

Public libraries around the state may have received phone calls last
fall with questions such as "What's Your Connection Speed?" Phone
surveys resulted in a list of libraries with connection rates at or
under 1.5 Mbps that are eligible to receive grant funding in order to
help them upgrade to broadband. Eligible libraries will soon receive
mailings from Connected Nation <http://connectednation.com/> outlining
the next steps in the process, which include attendance at one of two
Texas Summits all about broadband, scheduled for October 7-8 and
November 18-19, 2009 in San Antonio.

The Texas Summits will include conversations about the benefits of
high-speed connectivity, as well as explorations of new solutions to
improve and sustain connectivity with library leaders, community
partners, broadband providers and other local and state leaders.
Selected libraries that have successfully upgraded their connectivity
are also invited to share their stories at the Summits.

We look forward to working with Texas libraries, the Gates Foundation
<http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Pages/home.aspx> , Connected Nation and
the American Library Association OITP
<http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/oitp/index.cfm> to bring
broadband to more Texas libraries!

communication skills that can help resolve problems, and using policies
to support issues that arise.

Speaker: Jeanette Larson has more than 30 years experience working in
libraries. She is the author (with Dr. Herman Totten) of The Public
Library Policy Writer (Neal-Schuman, 2008) and is a frequent workshop
