How do the nuclear fuel carrying ships fair then? They
are British flagged and the last I heard they carried
20mm and 30mm cannon and sundry other things - they are
also completely civilian.

Presumably BNFL have a firearm certificate with the
appropriate authority on it, authorised by the Secretary
of State although the Home Office minister didn't mention
it when he was asked in Parliament.

It does say in the Act "as part of the equipment of the
ship" - so actually they wouldn't need a firearm certificate.
But they would need the authority of the Secretary of State
still.

That is the difference - if you build a shooting range on
a ship the guns are not part of the equipment of the ship.
(Although I suppose you could argue if the purpose of the
ship was purely a shooting range then the guns would be
part of the equipment).

A very distant relative of mine who now lives in Florida had
this situation where he had to have an FAC for the pistol
he kept on his boat but not for the flare gun, because one
was part of the equipment of his yacht and one wasn't.

Steve.
