Users: would anybody be interested in darcs having an optional, built-in gui?
Yes. TortoiseDarcs currently has a number of internal interfaces that would be better handled by code closer to the Darcs internals.
As it is, getting a list of patches, for example, involves spawning darcs, parsing a lot of output, and then putting it into a GUI. Even worse, we have to dry-run some (potentially slow) operations in order to show the user a list and then simply redo all the work when running the operation for real.
Developers: would anybody be interested in resurrecting the wxhaskell gui code in darcs?
We might be, but we would be unable to devote a significant amount of time to it for a couple of months, yet.
1. We create an official darcs-gui branch [...] 2. We create a darcs-ui mailing list [...]
The different suffixes might confuse people.
Note that this would not just be for the haskell code, but also projects like PatchWorks and TortoiseDarcs and maybe even things like darcs2rss.
Having a world-visible darcs server on which to put TortoiseDarcs would certainly be handy. So far, TortoiseDarcs is only available as zip files, and we don't have the time to set up and secure a darcs server.
3. People already working on 3rd party darcs guis consider also volunteering some time hacking on the built-in gui.
We are interested in volunteering some time for such a thing, but commercial pressures mean that we won't have much time to give, for a while.
Who knows? Maybe a tighter integration might be useful, maybe not.
It would be useful, as long as TortoiseDarcs can spawn specific bits of the new interface, in response to user action.
It'd also be a chance to learn or to improve your haskell. I'll bet your 3rd party guis and the built-in one will coexist happily -- more than one way to solve a problem, different problems being solved (?), and all that.
To be honest, the Haskell is a bit of a barrier for us, but we do what we can and Edwin has already submitted a couple of patches that make TortoiseDarcs possible and fast enough. I'm not sure how to raise their profile enough that they get reviewed and possibly included in Darcs, though.
Any takers? Anybody interested in helping out?
We're interested in helping out, but we don't have much time to offer. Regards, Grant Husbands. _______________________________________________ darcs-users mailing list [email protected] http://www.abridgegame.org/mailman/listinfo/darcs-users
