ok, my 2c worth: I think the fact that (a) we arent expected, (b) we surprise the blokes, and (c) we probably look quite scary at first sight (sorry DeeKay) makes us a lot safer than on our regular day rides.
BUT since a lot of these blokes are opportunistic (a broken bottle doesn't take much planning) staying together is definitely the trick I believe. Particularly on the slower sections (ok, so I don't want to give up the mamba).
