Hi,

I had thought that if I de-installed dt, removed the .config and
.cache/darktable directories (and in fact every directory named darktable
anywhere on the computer) this would remove the database and allow fresh
install but maybe I was being naïve.

So in the absence of any info as to what else might be necessary to clean out
old dt installs I've wiped the machine and done a fresh o/s install (this time
Mint14==Ubuntu 12) switched it to the AMD fglrx-updates driver, added Pascal's
unstable PPA and installed from that prior to any other actions.

It still hangs on first initialisation without displaying a gui, leaving a
darktable process running which can't be killed (short of a reboot). Running
darktable -d all shows identical messages as before i.e last output is
" creating new context d51020 [camera_control] loaded 1451 camera drivers."

As I need to produce a couple of photos quickly for friends I then installed
RawTherapee which worked flawlessly but reminded me of how much I now prefer
dt. What might the process for further debugging the problem be?

Rgds,
Rob.

You can use darktable --version to get a version number.

My Unstable PPA _currently_ ships ship a pre-release version of 1.1.3, which is
likely the most stable version easily available.

That said, you cannot just switch around in Darktable versions and not expect
any problems. Newer Darktable versions may upgrade the database which may cause
problems for older versions.

So once you start using git master, there may be no turning back.
Since I'm maintaining the 1.1.x branch I haven't used git master myself, so I'm
not sure if that's the case now, but it's certainly something to keep in mind.
