yes, I just completed the same operation or similar.  I moved a large
collection of images, > 40,000 to a larger hard-drive by
  selected subj images in dt
  removed images from dt
  physically moved images
  [re]imported images into dt

dt re-read the xmp files and all appears to work as expected/wanted.

I guess I fail to understand this, "writes the year ..."  if you refer to
writing the year as a tag, dt get the tag from the xmp file.

all my files contain copyright $year and the moved files maintained that.

warning, the process took me several days.  part of the extensive time was
having jpg files in part of the collection, requiring I import also jpg
files and then remove the unwanted.  and I did not sit and watch.  removal
of the unwanted jpgs was minor as I knew exactly where they were.
