Darktable does support imports directly from cameras and SD cards (through the 'gphoto2' library). The Darktable preferences under the "Session Options" tab let you set the patterns controlling where imported images are copied to. Section 2.3.1 of the manual [1] <https://darktable.gitlab.io/doc/en/lighttable_panels.html#import> goes into detail about this.
