My understanding is that exchanging arbitrary data through GEGL would be cool but is still science fiction as of now indeed. But allowing darktable to manage a stack of modules, and and then GIMP to manage another stack of GEGL transformations on top of it would seem reasonably feasible. One could change the darktable settings, re-export and let GIMP re-apply the GEGL transformations on the new image.
