As long as you keep your RAW and XMP this is all a matter of GIMP allowing to feed a new source into its GEGL pipe. In theory you could even see if you can get the embedded XMP out of the XCF so you only need to keep your RAW. But as I said, 99.99...% are thing GIMP has to do, not darktable.
