Personally, I have found that installing Debina on laptops isn't all that hard- provided you take a few minutes to understand the hardware. I have slink running on a versa v/50 and on a thinkpad 755CE- no sweat. Debian is a bit more time consuming to install- mostly because it asks you what to do instead of doing everything behind your back. But if you want to *learn* linux- install Debian. And is you have trouble, as k on the laptop list or #debian. (Also- Debian is the best, IMO, distro for installing on small partitions- which can be a concern in laptops.)
