You can get rid of all NET related stuff including refactoring if
you don't want that using The Delphi Configuration Manager 2. I had set up
such a personality inder D2005 myself and then turned refactoring back on as
well and it worked great, BUT the instructions for doing so are a bit
difficult to follow...as I rember, I wrote to the author for help and he was
very nice about it. Unfortunately those instructions were on the system I
had stolen over Thanksgiving so I no longer have a copy.
The Borland newsgroups can be found at: newsgroups.borland.com and
can be subscribed to via any newsreader and/or any web browser as well.
You'll find a listing of them somewhere within the support section of
Borland's Delphi Website.
I would NOT suggest getting rid of NET under D2006 however. You can
of course, however many "little" things are interrelated and may not
function as expected if you do. Also I believe that even if we're not
writing full-fledged NET apps, we will eventually be using some NET
assemblies down the line. I have VS 2003 w/Chrome for NET and have managed
to eek out a couple of small test apps using NET, but as soon as I get my
current project finished I'm planning on working with Delphi's NET VCL
because it offers so much that isn't otherwise available easily, and Borland
has brought their version of NET a little closer in line with that of
Microsoft, so trying to understand and work with the differences aren't as
difficult anymore.
My system is a 3.00 dual-core Pentium 4 in a Dell XPS system with 2
gigs Ram and two 7200 rpm 285 gig hardrives set up in a Raid 0
configuration. When I installed BDS2006 I did NOT install the C++
personality because I knew I'd never use it. But everything else went in.
I then installed a new component manager thru the tools api available in
codecentral, that provides a different kind of access to my component
library without effecting the standard use, Indy 10, IntraWeb, Rave,
client-side interbase tools, Youseful dialogs, visual, and tools, Dragon
Soft component set, LMD SE, the entire JCL and Jvcl from the Jedi group, (
which required me to then add an additiona directory to my Delphi 4
structure so it could load properly the C++ files I didn't install
originally), Orpheus Components, APRO components, TMS Components,
TshFindFiles, MM Objects component set, Component ACE all three sets,
ImageLib Combo for D7 which required a mere recompile, kbmMemTable, NexusDB,
Raize components, CodeSite, and MapiMail. I also installed Castilia, which
gives me my favorite tools from CodeRush, and GExperts. So I consider
myself LOADED! Then I used the command line option for BDS that starts it
up in the Delphi configuration without loading the others at all. It's
-pDelphi but make sure you add a space after BDS.exe and before the
-pDelphi! I left ECO and Together running and am actually making some use
of Together already.
Before making any changes, and without all the components and
add-ons, my startup time cold was about 70 secs. After that it would take
about 30 secs. Then after adding all the components initial startup time
was over a full minute and subsequent startups down to about 45 secs. After
using the command-line change initial startup time is now under 20 secs and
is perhaps a sec or two faster the next time. But the most important
improvement to me that I saw was in switching from design to code mode and
back again. Before making the command-line changes that could take as long
as 5 to 8 full secs! Now it's a sec at most! HTH's!

Hi Robert,

where's this forum you're talking about?

I have a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 with 1Gb RAM. I have two 7200rpm disks
setup with striping for fast disk access.... It takes 70 seconds to
load Delphi 2005 and I have DCM (although I'm really not sure what I
can and can't do without).

One thing I notice is even tho I thought I'd got rid of .Net stuff in
the DCM, it still initialises those services. I now regret adding
the .Net stuff during the initial install, but don't want to
reinstall. Is there anyway of getting rid of the .Net stuff post-install?

Cheers,
Chris.
