Design our own desktop from scratch? Even during the heyday
of the dotcom boom Sun hasn't had enough resources to do that.
(That's when we chose to join the GNOME community - before that
we were part of the industry consortium that co-created CDE.
Even OpenWindows was partly AT&T - Sun hasn't had a desktop
completely created by Sun since the NeWS days, and that failed
because customers didn't want a single source desktop different
from and incompatible with all the rest.)
