Sometimes I really do not understand SUN's policy (if SUN has something like that). It is company that is willing to spend $300m on R&D of Rock processor, and now we have rumors that maybe Rock will be canceled, and SUN won't have competitive architecture in HPC market segment in future.
On the other way, SUN is struggling from GNOME people weather they will to right job or not, from their opinion etc. Max OS X is also closed platform but anyone these days want to use it, even it is incompatible with the other platforms (whatever it means). MS Windows with famous kernel32.dll is also closed platform deployed only on Windows OSes, and I do not see that it is disadvantage of MS. I do not want to mention problem with drivers where we desperately need Gallium3D support to overcome current [driver] crisis. SUN is serious company. It is not some start-up company which become a star for a few years and then fade out and be acquired by some other IT giant. I'm sorry Alan, this email is not against you at all, I really respect you, but as time pass I ask myself how many people actually work in SUN on X Window System, Metacity, GNOME, etc? Why do not we promote OpenSolaris with slogan "OpenSolaris everywhere" - inside mobile phones, wireless base stations, digital radio broadcasters, home appliances, laptop/desktop computers, servers (low/mid/high end), and on mainframes. We have product far better than Mac OS X, and just have to adapt to each market segment. After that, incompatibility won't be issue because other companies will measure how much they are compatible with our products. My suggestion is - if you [SUN] made decision that GUI will be GNOME. Let we take GNOME, move things faster and make from this particular GUI really nice thing. After that we could adapt it to any device we wish.
