(Full motivation this time.) -1
We have... (1) ...a vote for commit rights for a person who hasn't requested them, and who has given them up voluntarily (2) ...a project whose biggest contributor *can't* sit on the project's PMC, or on any PMC at all Am I the only one who thinks that this is a bit backwards? ASF is a meritocracy, but merit isn't measured in lines of code committed alone. Nevertheless, I think that creating a project where some contributors, especially when those contributors include the by far biggest one, have a "glass ceiling" that keeps them out of the higher functions in the project is just the wrong way around. When starting a project, you're not supposed to start it crippled and constrained. It may end up that way, but why start it like that? When I dropped out of the PMC my rationale was to remove constraints, because I thought that if Avalon Planet is to have a chance of success, you must have the ability to shape the project into whatever form you need. Better one big change *now* and then stick with it, than many small changes that just gives users an endless catching up. But this hasn't been what happened. I expected a transition to Avalon 5, but that didn't happen. It had to be 4.x! Now the biggest contributor has no commit rights and the board doesn't want him on any PMC. But he has to be brought back! It is as if you want to make great changes, but without a clean break from Avalon-as-we-knew-it. But you can't do that. I have to pose the question: Why stay within the ASF? Is it the brand name? Is it the appeal of Apache when it comes to recruiting contributors? The Apache brand when selling it? It seems like you have no advantages by staying here, only disadvantages. Again, normally I wouldn't care if some group of people that doesn't include me wants to start a weird project - to each their own. But I have gone through so much crap with Avalon, so much wasted time on things that I shouldn't have to worry about, that I won't agree to anything that may bring back that mess again. Avalon is in cold storage, and given what has happened *every single time* we've brought it out of there, I think it can well stay there for the moment. Create Avalon planet if you want to. Create Metro. But do it outside of the ASF, or in another TLP. But don't do it here. Once you have built your dreams, and things are running smoothly, I'm sure that the ASF Board will be more than happy to run you through incubation and bring you back here. /LS --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
