Hi All (on the Dev and Users lists),

I (Martha Lindeman) have been corresponding with David and Bruce about designing the GUIs for OOoBib as its GUI architect. As a result, I have iterated the highest level of GUI design in discussions with them, and this evening I posted the current version of the architectural-design document in the OOoBib project library for your comments. The link is http://bibliographic.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=451&expandFolder=451&folderID=0

I uploaded both the pdf and sxw files so that you could choose.

David and Bruce suggested that I give you some background to introduce myself, so I have pasted below the brief explanation I included in the document itself:

  1.

As an author with a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology, I write
extensively and recently searched for software solutions to
support my use of citations and references (which is how I found
     the OOoBib project);

  2.

When I was a research scientist at Online Computer Library Center
(OCLC) for three years in the late 1980's, my team defined and
then successfully prototyped an object-oriented project in X11R2
that explored the future design of databases and user interfaces
for electronic full-text and multi-media information retrieval; and

  3.

I have been a user-interaction consultant and trainer for almost
20 years, and my specialty is designing user interactions with
complex systems that require integration of multiple pieces that
     are also complex in themselves.

I currently live in Columbus, Ohio, and my consulting/training company is called Agile Interactions, Inc. I picked the name Agile Interactions because the purpose of user-interaction design is to make user interactions quick and easy to do (i.e., "agile" per Webster's Dictionary).

The GAINS(sm) design process I am using is our iterative, four-level process that allows collection of feedback at different levels of design without adding significantly to development time. I included an overview of the GAINS process in the document so that you can know the feedback points -- those points when you will be able to have a significant impact on the GUI design before anyone starts the detailed layout of the displays. Thus we can hammer on the GUI design until it represents what we want in the system without anyone spending time doing rework.

David, Bruce and I would deeply appreciate your taking the time to read the GUI architectural design document and providing comments, suggestions, etc. There are many unanswered (and even unasked) questions that must be answered before detailed design of the GUI can be started. So, in advance, "Thank you"! I am looking forward to getting your feedback.

Regards,
Martha Lindeman, Ph.D.
