I'm glad to hear of that. I've otherwise heard very little positive or
negative on this.
But I also meant the management of this project is lacking. It's
hideously manual.
it could be improved by creating a webapplication that handles the
directory better and does better OOo branding / marketing / black
magic.
Go ahead :-)....
if usermanagement is implented well, the regional idea might be
possible and solveable as well. and it should. as well as better
filtering, etc. pp. . nevertheless, at least some more or less
serious resources are needed for such an application. i dreamed of
creating one since about 1 and a half year but i was not able to do
so next to my buisness until today. it shouldn't be that hard but at
least it takes some time to do so and when it's started it should be
made "en-block" and done well. i can offer webspace with ssh access
and php / mysql right away.
There are possibilities to address this. One of them is paying someone
for it. But let's wait on that.
i know a lot of smaller sized companys that do love using OOo and I
think this is a target-audience as well.
Yes.
on the side of the consultants / buisnesses, they should have got
the opportunity to get in contact with each other as well.
maybe the local usergroups / associations in certain countries can
give input as well. for germany i know of:
OpenOffice.org Deutschland e.V.
http://www.ooodev.org/contact/view.html
We are forming an initiative, in fact, to establish local groups more
or less formally; we hadn't done that before, and they are certainly
invited to work on this subject.
certification, if handeled properly and constantly over the years,
can be a good thing. but I don't think that the up-front problem is
a missing certification. if the ooo council has decided to do so,
they should take care about realisation as well.
They have not taken that step yet but I am keenly aware of the
realization problem: it's a lot of work.
i would be interessted into an ongoing discussion about the
development because i think when this thing gets its own drive it
can evolve quite quickly.
yes.
Thanks for your insight and thoughts. In the meanwhile if others can
lend a hand to automating the process of adding names to a database,
I'd be delighted to hear from you.

I am the supposed lead of this project and I am not leading it at

The project has some problems: it's purpose is not clear and it
maintains a large unwieldy database (actually just large list) of
businesses. We have no real policy to filter this list and we ought
to.
I have been working on related issues: to see about creating a
filter for consultants offering support and services for OOo. The
idea would be that those who offer services of a certain quality
get listed; those who do not are not, at least not by OOo. As you
may imagine, that's not been so easy.
Still, I think it's a worthwhile goal. We need to make it easier
for users--gov'ts, companies, individuals, education--to find and
buy support and services.
(Disclaimer: my employer, Sun, offers support and services for OOo;
but my goal is not to promote that company but the ecosystem.)
So: two things.
* let's create a database for the consultants' directory. Several
of you over the years have volunteered. If you are still interested
in helping, please step forward again.
All names would be transferred over.
* let's work on the certification process. The Community Council
last year (and year before) agreed that OOo can and should come up
with criteria for support. Not much happened; a boring subject for
many. Last September, we moved this forward, and since then, there
has been work. Sophie Gautier (cc'd here) has stimulated work to
build on this certification syllabus [0]. Discussions are on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
, and you can see the archives. [1]
Please use the certification list if you wish to discuss this topic.

My interest again is in promoting the consultants. But the current
set up makes it nearly impossible. Yet these consultants are key
members of the OOo ecosystem, and we need to grow that.
