You can't make a 'tryouts' folder? Something like:

http://documentation.openoffice.org/tryouts/jean/

Surely, the documentation project doesn't need to go through the website
project to experiment with a few ideas.

Sure.

Here are some thoughts:

1) I'm reading a really great book on website design and usability. The
title is "Don't Make Me THINK". One piece of advice from it:

  * Remove half the words on the page. Then remove half of what's left.

The author explains that people don't view websites like a newspaper. They
view them more like a bill board going at 60 MPH. You can't write a whole
lot (unless the page is an article).

So here's a first thought:

Start by removing all the descriptions from the links. The link names
  you picked are self-evident.

Once this is done, you are free to move around the links more freely. You
can think about adding icons, if you wish.

2) Other ideas:

 - The quickstart link contains only one item, which is also found
under manuals. I think it should go.

 - Kill the mission statement, or summarize it by half.

 - Put the How To Help higher up, where it is more visible. If you remove
lots of text, it should be possible to do this without hindering
the content side of the page.

Just some random thoughts to get the ball rolling.

Cheers,
