We've been doing that in Gnome for more than two years (probably a lot longer), because GNU xgettext supports it when extracting translatable messages from files. Now, a wild suggestion would be to port OpenOffice.org to gettext, and use appropriate context markers for same messages, and "translators comments" for describing crappier stuff. gettext has many advantages (the only disadvantage that I know of is lack of natural context markers, but with "domains", we'd rarely come across a need for those), such as easier localisation pack installation (no need to recompile the software), and we already have solutions for things like .xml, .desktop, .schemas, .glade and similar files with intltool (and xml2po for docs), so basically everything is there. The big question is: how much effort would be needed to port OOo to use gettext?
