we are part of the asf. if someone wants to sponsor apache lenya, an appropriate way is to donate manpower to the project. i don't see how canonical is relevant in that context.
the way to 'take away the sword of damocles' is to do regular releases, update the web site so that the project does not look dead to a bystander, and grow the community. all known quantities, they just need doing.
