First I tried the new Beta 173.08 version - the shadows were fixed. It caused compiz to crash when playing with the plugins. So I installed the released 169.12 version instead - shadows are still fine. Turns out there's something with the compiz blur (especially Gaussian) plugin that caused the crash - in both beta and the released versions of the driver.
