This is definitely a bug with the nvidia driver.  I'm using Compiz built from
git with 173.08 on an nVidia 8400 GS laptop Ubuntu 8.04 and the shadow
corruption is gone not to mention a considerable performance improvement with
Compiz. The bug was present using nvidia-glx-new driver from Hardy's repository
