I don't think there is chance of convincing core devs to switch to IRC. There is already an active k8s slack, so an alternative would be deploying something like Matrix [1]. Matrix is able to communicate with slack users and IRC users (almost) seamlessly, so we'd have a flexibility of using various clients.
