Bear in mind that I do have certain plans with this, that requires that all of this remains together, and not split out over several 'logical' files for roads, railways, etc.
And it would depend on what you mean by validate. You can certainly render your own tiles, put them in another OpenLayers layer, and switch between them to compare your results to the regular map.
